The Big Picture

In the grand scheme of things, celebrity blogs may not be as important to the cultural landscape as those the celebs writing these blogs might like to think. It all boils down to the simple question: do we really need this?

Would we be significantly worse off without celebrity bloggers?

The answer is a fairly obvious "no." There's only so much information that's pertinent to our everyday lives, and what Barbara Streisand ate for lunch is not a part of that. Celebrity blogs, for all intents and purposes, seem to sink into their own excess. It's a part of the current pop culture over-saturation, where we're being constantly inundated with too much from too many places.

For entertainment, celebrity blogs offer a nice glimpse behind the veil to the people we watch on our TVs or hear on our radios, but the value beyond that is questionable. But in today's world, where YouTube and People Magazine still rule supreme, it may not be proper to dismiss this platform as superfluous. People obviously read these blogs--perhaps the same people who read tabloids, though this is merely speculation--and celebrity confessions are what have driven previous media outlets like VH1 and E! News for a long time. I doubt it will go away anytime soon.

In fact, with Twitter still gaining momentum--which houses many more "celebrity" accounts than any standard blogging service--microblogging will inevitably become the next popular form of self-expression for the famous. The only question is how much celebrities can actually share in 140 characters or less...
